Bio
Steven James and the Revival is much more than just a band, and “The Foundation” is much more than the name to an album. The Foundation is a life dedicated to music and the people, places, and things that have been an inspiration. The Foundation is the strength of family, faith, and community. The Foundation is discovering who you really are and where you come from.
Already an accomplished musician, Steven James Carlson began writing the songs which would later become the backbone of The Foundation in the summer of 2010. He had recently moved back to his hometown of Duluth, MN, where he decided to dedicate his life to writing and performing original music. In moving back, Steven was re-united with his brothers; David Carlson and Nick Carlson. Music has always been a prominent theme in the Carlson household, and reuniting with his brothers allowed him to take his songs to a new level. Nick’s strong yet unbelievably clear voice paired with Dave’s raw vocals and precision guitar work added a new dimension to the songs that was previously unattainable.
When the time came to enter the studio and record The Foundation, Steven was able to enlist some of the most talented and accomplished musicians in Minnesota; they also happened to be some of his greatest friends. These musicians include: musician Andy Schuster (The Federales, Wild Colonial Boys, Cory Wong Quartet) on bass, Mookie Tierney on keys and organ, and Kristopher Schoen and Jeff Peterson (Roster Mccabe) on drums. The album was tracked by Engineer Ryan Rusch at his studio, The Weight Room in Washburn, WI. Sessions also took place at The Drum Farm and Sacred Heart Music center, as well as from within Steven’s Duluth home studio. The album was both produced and mixed by Steven James Carlson and Ryan Rusch at The Weight Room.
Fans have compared Steven’s songwriting to Bob Dylan due to his artistic approach to each song. His lyrical approach is likened to Johnny Cash. Steven wraps these songs up with the spirit of rock and roll to give the album a sound all his own.
The Foundation combines Folk, Blues, Country, and good old fashioned Rock and Roll played with clockwork precision. Dark powerful tunes such as “Jonas” will have you sitting on the edge of your seat, while more upbeat songs such as “I Need a Way” and “The Grasshopper Man” will have you dancing and singing along. All in all, The Foundation is the result of family and friends coming together, putting in the work, and producing a beautiful album that is The Foundation. –KP
